Katherine Groesbeck Survival is a Confusing Attempt
Statement "Midway upon the journey of our life I found myself within a forest dark, For the straightforward pathway had been lost." - Dante Alighieri, The Divine Comedy, The Inferno
I am composed of texture, strokes and shapes. I am survive, move, dance, run. Collecting and dragging. Aching. My joints are arthritic. The journey is unclear, I migrate in a fog.
Process Georges Braque said “art is meant to disturb.” I create work that disrupts and prompts a pause. Used army blankets, clothing line and tarp are re-appropriated to create wearable garb. The suits are meant to be worn and taken outside of the gallery space. They are photographed and filmed in both the natural and the urban settings - the Oregon Coast, downtown Portland, Pioneer Place Mall, Right Aid, the forest, sand dunes etc.. Although the suits seem to be a different species than the human race, they are relateable. We all struggle, want, and need. We are both functional and absurd.
